چکیده

We investigate the phase structure of lattice QCD for general number of flavors NF . Based on numerical data combined with the results of the perturbation theory we propose the following picture: When NF ≥ 17, there is only one IR fixed point at vanishing gauge coupling, i.e., the theory in the continuum limit is trivial. On the other hand, when 16 ≥ NF ≥ 7, there is a non-trivial fixed point. Therefore, the theory is non-trivial with anomalous dimensions, however, without quark confinement. Theories which satisfy both quark confinement and spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in the continuum limit exist only for NF ≤ 6. ∗) Talk presented by K. Advanced Algorithms for the Simulation of Gauge Theories with Dynamical Fermionic Degrees of Freedom

The topic of this thesis is the numerical simulation of quantum chromodynamics including dynamical fermions. Two major problems of most simulation algorithms that deal with dynamical fermions are (i) their restriction to only two mass-degenerate quarks, and (ii) their limitation to relatively heavy masses. Realistic simulations of quantum chromodynamics, however, require the inclusion of three ...

The Effective Lagrangian of Three Dimensional Quantum Chromodynamics

We consider the low energy limit of three dimensional Quantum Chromodynamics with an even number of flavors. We show that Parity is not spontaneously broken, but the global (flavor) symmetry is spontaneously broken. The low energy effective lagrangian is a nonlinear sigma model on the Grassmannian. Some Chern–Simons terms are necessary in the lagrangian to realize the discrete symmetries correc...

Experiences with dynamical chirally improved fermions

We simulate Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) in four Euclidean dimensions with two (degenerate mass) flavors of dynamical quarks. The Dirac operator we use is the so-called chirally improved Dirac operator. We discuss the algorithm used for the simulation as well as the checks and some results on lattices up to size 8 for fermion mass parameters down to 0.1. This is the first attempt to introduce d...

Is it still worth searching for lepton flavor violation in rare kaon decays ? ∗

Prospective searches for lepton flavor violation (LFV) in rare kaon decays at the existing and future intermediate-energy accelerators are considered. The proposed studies are complementary to LFV searches in muon-decay experiments and offer a unique opportunity to probe models with approximately conserved fermion-generation quantum number with sensitivity superior to that in other processes. C...

Extraction of the strong coupling constant and strange quark mass from semileptonic τ decays

In this lecture I present a pedagogical introduction to the low-energy phenomenology of light flavors. The renormalization scheme freedom in defining QCD parameters is discussed. It is shown in some details how one can extract an accurate numerical value for the strong coupling constant from the τ -lepton decay rate into hadrons. As a related topic I discuss some peculiarities of definition of ...
